Sleepless Night

February 25, 2010

So I’m up at 1-ish in the morning.

This often happens when I have too much on my mind, and I can’t get to sleep. So what’s an insomniac to do? Engage in pointless activity of course, which, in my case, involves pulling out my videocam and filming random objects in my room. Of course, since my room is hardly in the state to be filmed under the best of conditions, this means clips of my carefully accumulated cacophony of questionable literature.

From R-rated manga (R for violence, not sex you horny beast) to literature readings, I’ve got more books than I can be bothered to read. I have (Sir) Terry Pratchett’s Going Postal, a wry satire about technology and business. Naruto, a decent manga if you’re into unending and rather pointless storylines. Berzerk, an ultra-violent manga born from the legacy of Fist of the North Star, which I first found in one of my uncle’s rooms. I was mesmerized by the image of a finger causing a head to explode. I remember trying to do the same to the resident school bully, only to find that his fist had more impact on my skull than my finger on his.

I have a plethora of 90s comics, when the great comic glut happened, and a new publisher appeared each month. Prior to the aftermath, there was Marvel, and there was Detective Comics (DC), and everything else was Indie. Post 90s comics glut, Marvel filed for Chapter 11, DC pulled market share, Marc Silvestri went on to form Top Cow, Jim Lee founded Image, and Rob Liefield founded Maximum Press on the bedrock of characters which only came in angry, and angry in painful poses.

And the rather aptly named Randy Queen created Darkchylde, who is a teenage girl who turns into a monster. That’s all you need to know. Oh, and her clothes don’t turn with her, so she’s constantly finding herself dazed and naked in public places. It’s also a thinly veiled metaphor for the coming of age and the onset of puberty. But I’m just being pedantc at this point.
